Douglas W. "Doug" Duff's Obituary
Douglas Willard Duff, 85, died peacefully at home on May 14th after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born October 30, 1932 in Paul, ID. He hunted and fished for much of his youth, enjoying the outdoors of Southern Idaho and the beauty of the Salmon River. Two of his favorite fishing spots were Henry's Lake and the whitewater below Minidoka Dam. He fished pretty much all of the good streams in the southern half of state.
He met Susie, his wife of 48 years, while earning his PhD in comparative physiology at the University of Missouri. He took his first teaching job at Beloit College in Beloit, WI, where his daughter, Jody, was born, and they eventually settled in Northern Indiana when he took a job teaching at Indiana University South Bend. He taught there until retirement, achieving tenure, chairing the department, and inspiring many young students who went on to become doctors and nurses. His was most proud, however, of the research he did with the Indiana University School of Medicine at Notre Dame. Many of the healthcare providers who met him these last few years will recall his description of measuring blood pressure in fish.
Doug, along with his family and friends, had a great many adventures over the years, camping and canoeing throughout Northern Indiana, Michigan, and Wisconsin. He inspired a great love of the outdoors in many people.
He finally moved back to the mountains in August, 2008, to be near his daughter and her family who settled in Missoula, and his life adventures continued. For the past 10 years he befriended many people with the same loves of birding, fishing, skiing, and microbrews. Everyone who met him knew him as a man of great character, wisdom, and wit. He will be dearly missed.
He is survived by his wife, Susie, daughter Jody, son-in-law Brian, granddaughters Josie and Eva of Missoula, MT, brother Larry of Rupert, ID, and numerous nieces and nephews.
There will be a Celebration of Life at Bitter Root Brewery on June 3rd, from noon to 4 pm. All are welcome. The family suggests memorials may be made to Bitterroot Audubon, P.O. Box 326, Hamilton, MT 59840, or Fly Fishers of the Bitterroot, P.O. Box 692, Victor, MT 59875.
